Holding On

Be it far from me to consider myself any sort of Linkin Park fan but their latest song seems to speak to me, particularly this line: “All I wanna do is trade this life for something new… holding on to what I haven’t got.”

That single phrase captures the endless pursuit of my heart to satisfy the God-shaped hole within me. It does not matter if it is the desire for wealth, power, or love… they are all, in essence, the same thing… unsatisfactory. I have been holding on to what I haven’t got.

My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

[Jeremiah 2:13]

It’s like trading the ocean for a drop of water or giving away all my money in exchange for fools’ gold.

May I know that I have all the wealth that I need because You gave up all your riches to become poor. May I see that I have all the power that I need, because You gave up all Your might to become weak. And may I hold on to every drop of ink in Your Word that declares (at the cost of every drop of Your blood) that I am loved… more than any friend… more than any parent… more than any lover… by You… because you were rejected… for me.

Jesus, I know You are all that I have. Help me know, that You’re all that I need.
